Why I like this photo

This candid wedding portrait was taken at Gabby and Louis wedding at Eastington Park in Gloucestershire

Why do I like this images?

There’s always something going on at Weddings. As a documentary wedding photographer my main priority is to capture images of the Bride and Groom but in order to get the full story it’s vital to get some great shots of family and friends and you can’t get much more important than Grandma.

After the meal, there is often a period of time when the guests relax chatting and drinking. This is a good time for me to roam and capture some of those candid moments.

In this particular photo of Grandma, I couldn’t help noticing some beautiful natural light spilling into the room from the window on the right. The light has high-lighted Grandma’s face whilst the rest of the image remains relatively dark, this draws your eye in. In many of my pictures people are quite often not aware of me but in this image, Grandma has spotted me and she’s not quite sure what to make of me taking her picture.

However, this direct gaze creates a connection between Grandma and the viewer, which seems to make the image that bit extra special. It’s like I can almost see her thinking and it’s for these reasons why I love this photo.
